Rash outbreak declared at SW Calgary school

It’s not the measles, but a bad rash spreading through a southwest Calgary school has triggered an alert.

The Calgary Board of Education says the outbreak was declared at West Springs School due to a lot of kids reporting rash-like symptoms.

In a letter to parents, the school cautioned the germs spread easily and Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding parents to keep sick kids at home.

“This a very routine rash outbreak investigation in a school and not connected to measles,” reads a statement from AHS. “There are many common viruses that can cause routine rash illness in children and rash outbreaks in childcare and school settings are very common.”

Since January, around 50 rash outbreaks have been reported in Calgary’s childcare and school settings, according to AHS.

The health agency is reassuring parents they’ve launched a very routine investigation into the latest outbreak and they’re keeping close tabs on it.

West Springs School has applied general outbreak prevention measures, including enhanced cleaning and strict hand hygiene.
