Calgary fire crews rescue cats from NE home up in smoke

By CityNews Staff

Calgary Fire Department crews rescued two cats from the lower level of a fiery and smoky northeast Renfrew home on Sunday.

It happened around noon at the 1100 block of Rupert Road at a single-storey home with lower suites.

The Calgary Fire Department says crews that arrived were met with smoke from multiple openings and had to force their way into the lower suite.

The kitchen was on fire, but was quickly doused. At the same time, firefighters searched for two cats who hadn’t evacuated with everyone else. They were found unharmed.

The Calgary Fire Department says the fire was contained to the lower level, but smoke and damage were noticed throughout.

While the cause is under investigation, the CFD reminds Calgarians to have a working smoke alarm and an escape plan.
