Police continue to investigate a brazen shooting between vehicles in southeast Calgary that left two people hurt on Tuesday.
Emergency crews were called to the area of 12 Avenue SE and 27 Street SE in the community of Radisson Heights/Albert Park around 6:55 p.m. for reports of a shooting.
Calgary police believe a suspect fired several shots from a vehicle into the victim vehicle. The victim’s vehicle returned fire and struck the suspect’s vehicle several times.
The victim was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition and remains in hospital in stable condition. A second person who police believe is connected to the shooting was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was released from hospital.
One area resident tells CityNews her family heard around 10 to 15 shots fired.
“I’ve been told there was kids at the park that went running into apartment buildings,” says Alexandria Lloyd. “I have two three-year-olds at home, it’s terrifying that its right around the corner from my house.”
Police say stray bullets struck nearby homes, but no members of the public were hurt. Officers believe the shooting was targeted and say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
“The level of violence displayed during this incident is very concerning,” says Staff Sgt. Matthew Gow. “Several shots were fired between two vehicles in a busy residential area where citizens were going about their day.”
“Although we believe the incident was targeted, we saw a complete disregard for community safety play out in a very public setting.”
Four people were arrested shortly after the incident, but police say two of them have since been released. No charges have been laid.
The Victim Assistance Support Team (VAST) will be in the neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon, according to police.
