Population growth puts strain on Calgary Transit

    UP NEXT:

Just before 3 pm, the driver of a Ford F-150 struck a light standard at 14th Street and 17th Avenue SW after another vehicle hit them and fled the scene.

A driver is facing charges after allegedly trying to steal a vehicle after crashing a truck in Calgary’s Beltline neighbourhood on Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 14 Street and 17 Avenue SW around 2:45 p.m. after getting reports that a pickup truck crashed into a pole.

Police say a Ford 150 hit a light standard at the intersection, causing the truck’s airbag to deploy. Witnesses reported seeing the driver walk away unharmed.

Around 30 minutes later, responding officers who were in the area looking for the driver saw someone trying to carjack a vehicle and arrested a suspect before they could get away.

Investigators determined the attempted carjacker was the driver who crashed the pickup truck.

The driver, 42-year-old Colt Arnell, is facing seven criminal charges, including attempted robbery, resisting arrest, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police also tell CityNews Arnell is also facing charges related to possessing a stolen credit and identification card.
