Wet weather Monday for Calgary with snowfall warnings outside the city

With snowfall warnings in effect west and north of the city, Calgary is getting hit with a mixed bag of precipitation on Monday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is calling for flurries and rain showers that will change over to rain around noon, which is expected to change to snow at some point in the afternoon.

The weather agency says Calgary can expect five centimetres of snow through to Tuesday morning.

ECCC meteorologist Erin Staunton says they are keeping a close watch on the conditions.

“We are expecting some snow tonight, but as to how much actually sticks, that’s going to pretty localized and variable within the city itself,” she says. “We could see up to five centimetres in parts of the city by first thing Tuesday morning.”

Heavy flurries are expected for areas north and west of the city, including Airdrie, Cochrane, and Canmore, where anywhere from 10 to 25 centimetres is expected.

“We expect higher snowfall amounts to the west and northwest particularly over the higher terrain, the mountains and the foothills could see up to 20 centimetres there,” says Staunton.

Snowshowers late in April are not an uncommon occurrence in Calgary — the city’s all-time snowfall record for Apr. 21 was set in 1932 at well over 40 centimetres.

The weather is expected to return to spring-like conditions starting Wednesday through to the weekend with daytime highs in the double digits expected through to Sunday.
