A driver is in hospital and a vehicle is destroyed after an SUV crashed into a tree in northeast Calgary on Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Centre Street and 78 Avenue NE around 1:15 p.m. for reports of a crash.

Calgary police say a vehicle crashed into a tree.

Images from the scene show the badly damaged with nearly half of its body sheared off.

Part of the SUV’s undercarriage and one of its wheels appear to have landed several feet away from where the rest of the vehicle came to a rest.

Despite the massive damage, police say the driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
