Design phase of Indian Residential School Memorial underway in Calgary

The City of Calgary is asking for your input as part of phase 2 of the Indian Residential School Memorial Project. Phoenix Phillips reports.

Phase 2 of Calgary’s Indian Residential School Memorial Project is underway, focusing on community feedback on four design concepts for the future permanent memorial.

The City of Calgary has put four proposed designs forward, each with their own symbolic name: ‘The Wandering Spirit,’ ‘My Special Child,’ ‘Footsteps in the Firelight,’ and ‘Our Way of Life.’

Mayor Jyoti Gondek says this project is not only a critical part to reconciliation but also a significant step forward

“For us to be able to honour what they’ve been through and recognize the true history, is really important,” she said.

The city says the creation of the monument advances Calgary’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, specifically Call to Action #82.

The four in-person feedback sessions begin Thursday at The Confluence Historic Site & Parklands.

Construction on the project is expected to start in the spring of 2026
