Bow Valley College cuts 103 permanent positions in wake of multi-million-dollar budget shortfall

Nearly 100 staff at Bow Valley College are losing their jobs – after the school’s Board of Governers approved a $15.4 million shortfall within the 2025-26 budget.

A Calgary-based post-secondary institution is facing the realities of tight financial times.

Bow Valley College (BVC) says in a statement to 660 NewsRadio that its 2025/26 budget tallies a shortfall of $15.4 million.

To blame, according to the school, is a reduction in international student enrolment and other funding changes, including Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and the Foundational Learning Assistance Program (FLAP).

“The college had to find efficiencies and make difficult decisions,” a representative said.

As a result, BVC says it is cutting 103 permanent positions. Of those 97 are occupied and six are vacant.

It is unclear which departments these positions belong to.

BVC says it is committed to supporting its employees through these changes as it continues to adapt to developments in the post-secondary landscape.

“Our priority remains offering students a high-quality education that benefits our city, province, and beyond,” the school said.

BVC has campuses in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Okotoks.
