A Calgarian living in the northwest community of Parkdale says she’s concerned after an osprey nest spotted atop a crane at a construction site disappeared.

Nicholle Llewellyn says she noticed the bird in it’s nest on top of the equipment at a Truman Homes construction site in her neighbourhood.

But, last week, it seemingly disappeared without a trace.

“Friday morning went to work, and I came home and there was no nest, it was gone,” Llewellyn said. “I was a little disheartened.

“I realized it’s probably not the best place for osprey to build a nest on a construction site. I was worrying about what might happen everyday — if they were going to come and tear it down or… just like that it happened so quickly.”

If the nest was taken down, Llewellyn says she’s hoping it was done with dignity and preserved.

“I hope that they took it down in a way to preserve it. I don’t know when they relocate it if that’s possible for the birds to still use that nest,” she said. “If there’s eggs then I imagine they go to a place where they’re going to nest them and let them hatch.”

CityNews has reached out to Truman Homes and the Alberta Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas about the removal of the nest, and if there are ways to discourage birds from coming back to the area in a peaceful way.
