Owner facing multiple tickets after loose dog bites people in SE Calgary

The owner of a dog that was allegedly running loose and biting people in southeast Calgary over the weekend is facing several violations.

In a statement, the City of Calgary says bylaw officers were notified of a fearful and aggressive border collie loose in the community of New Brighton shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday.

Before the bylaw officers arrived, the dog had allegedly bit two people and a Calgary police officer on scene deployed a taser, but the weapon didn’t stop the dog.

Bylaw officers were unable to locate and wrangle the canine and were off shift by the time the dog was eventually caught by its owner with the help of police officers.

Acting Staff Sgt. Mike Kelm tells CityNews it was a challenging situation.

“Like any potentially dangerous call for service, you just want to try to do your best to manage the situation, with the mindset of keeping the public as safe as possible while you do that,” he says.

No serious injuries were reported.

The tickets were issued to the owner under the Responsible Pet Ownership bylaw, one for an animal running at large and a second for an animal injuring a person.
