Acid spill forces evacuation of hundreds from SE Calgary industrial building

More than 200 employees were evacuated from a southeast Calgary industrial building on Wednesday afternoon due to an acid spill.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says crews were called to a building near 52 Street SE and 68 Avenue SE after getting reports of an unknown chemical spill.

CFD crews arrived to find several metres of a liquid acid had spilled in a room that was built for containment.

More than 200 employees were evacuated from the building as crews worked to plug the leak.

The spill was contained to the original room and the Hazmat team was able to identify the substance, says CFD spokesperson Carol Henke.

No injuries were reported.

“Crews are waiting for an independent contractor to mitigate the remainder of the spill,” says Henke.
