By CityNews Staff

As the weather turns warmer, Calgarians are flocking outdoors to take in the hallmark events of a summer in the city.

Here’s some events happening in Calgary this last weekend of May.

Lilac Fest

One of Calgary’s biggest street festivals returns to Mission this weekend.

Lilac Fest will take over 4 Street SW and area for the free event on Sunday.

The festival features various activities for all ages. There will be over 500 vendors featuring artisan crafts, imported wares, and community organizations.

Six stages will also host over 70 performances throughout the day.

There will be parking bans in effect around the area to allow for the event.

The city says road closures and temporary parking restrictions will be in effect from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on 4 Street SW between 12 and 26 avenues, and 17 Avenue SW between 2 and 5 streets.

Calgary Humane Society Dog Jog

More than 700 Calgarians and their dogs will take over North Glenmore Park in support of fighting animal cruelty.

The Calgary Humane Society’s 24th annual Dog Jog will go Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek will kick off the race at 10:45 a.m.

Participants will walk or run along the five-kilometre path around the reservoir.

Fundraising for the event helps fund programs that are focused on cruelty prevention and public awareness, humane education in local schools and the community, animal rehabilitation, and creating a brighter future for the vulnerable animals in the community, the Humane Society says.

The event website shows more than $200,000 has been raised.

Registration for the event has now closed.
