A new year-round soccer facility has opened in Calgary’s southeast amid a push for more recreation space in the city.

Starting Saturday, the Soccer Centre Dome will be open for public bookings.

The facility upgrades cam at a cost of $28 million, $3.6 million of which was provided by the Government of Alberta’s Sustainability Initiative.

“Our community is growing fast, and access to recreational facilities is a top priority for us,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “This new dome is not just an investment in sport — it’s an investment in health, connection, and quality of life for our residents.”

The Soccer Centre Dome has a competition-sized artificial turf field and an amenity building with eight change rooms, one referee change room, a universal public washroom, and additional administration and storage space.

Parking lot upgrades in the northwest corner of the property were completed in the fall of 2024. The city says this reduced water pooling in the area.

More upgrades to the parking lot are expected this summer, adding more than 100 parking spaces by the time construction is complete.

Calgary’s recently approved recreation plan, GamePLAN, aims to have created 13 additional indoor field facilities by 2050, ensuring there are ample recreation spaces for all Calgarians as the population booms.

The Making Waves service standard seeks to increase bookable hours at indoor fields and athletic parks by 2.5 times, and to meet a service standard of one indoor field facility (fieldhouse) per 150,000 residents.
