Krispy Kreme super fan Matt McKay had a lot to look forward to Tuesday morning as the American donut chain opened its doors in Calgary.
McKay lives near Cochrane and made the trek to the storefront on Macleod Trail SW to make sure he was first in line.
“They’re just so tasty and they can’t be beat. I heard when they opened the Winnipeg location that it got pretty crazy there and people were camped out for multiple nights,” he said. “I had to be here bright and early to make sure I was on time.”
On Monday, McKay told CityNews he was prepared to stay in the parking lot, rain or shine.
“Keep the thoughts of warm donuts in your mind, and that’ll keep you going through the night,” he said. “Get in the sleeping bag, a blanket and a pillow and I either switch between my car if it was raining — because we did get a bit of rain last night — to my chair.”
This isn’t McKay’s first rodeo; he also camped out overnight for the grand opening of the Krispy Kreme in Edmonton last year.
“It’s definitely been nicer here than it was in Edmonton back in December,” he recalled. “I have a different sleeping bag for that excursion.”
McKay got some merchandise during his trip to Edmonton last year, including a Krispy Kreme hat and keychain.
He says another fan came by Monday morning, planning on being at the front of the line. However, his plans were thwarted by McKay.
“When he saw that he was first in line he’s like ‘I should just go back home,'” McKay said.
The store opened to the public at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
