Calgary is gearing up to be in the global spotlight as the G7 Summit comes to Southern Alberta in less than a week.
City officials say they expect a major economic boost from the leaders’ summit set to take place in just a few days in Kananaskis Country.
The mayor says it’s time for Calgary to showcase itself on the world stage.
“It’s important that our country’s leaders and the world understand that Calgary is not only the economic engine of Canada, but a global hub for safe, secure, and responsible energy,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek on Monday.
According to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the G7 could see up to $190 million in economic activity in the region and up to $240 million across the province.
“With that impact felt across hotels, restaurants, retailers, security event management, you name it,” says CEO Deborah Yedlin.
As an example, a hot dog stand right across from Municipal plaza, one of the three designated protest zones in Calgary, could potentially feel the impact.
“Everybody loves money, so if money comes, no problem,” says Sayed Znati at Deluxe Hot Dog Stand. “If people come here to protest, we’ll make for them the best sausage in Calgary, and they will maybe love the country and maybe come back next stampede.”
Around 10,000 hotel bookings are tied to the G7. It’s hospitality that the mayor is hoping to show as she gets set to welcome Prime Minister Mark Carney and other delegates.
The city intends to gift a Smithbilt white hat to every dignitary that shows up, including U.S. President Donald Trump who has levelled tariffs against Canada.
“It’s really important to practice diplomacy, so all delegates will be treated with an equal amount of respect,” says Gondek.
As those delegates arrive, the airport is warning of increased aircraft noise in the area, but say despite some road closures and heightened security measures, the airport will still be operational for travellers during the G7.
Along with the heads of powerful nations, thousands of other delegates and journalists are expected to arrive in the city this weekend. Residents should expect delays as motorcades make their way around town.
The G7 Leaders’ summit runs from June 15 to the 17.
