Two boys charged in ‘random’ robbery of elderly woman: Calgary police

Two teens have been charged in the attempted robbery of an elderly woman outside a seniors’ home in southeast Calgary.
Calgary police say it happened when a 75-year-old woman was walking from her car to her apartment near 17 Avenue and 61 Avenue SE around 6:45 p.m. on July 11.
Police allege two boys approached the woman and tried to take her purse. She resisted and yelled for help, prompting a neighbour to intervene.
The suspects ran off before police arrived. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Police are describing the incident as random.
“This was an unprovoked and opportunistic robbery that targeted a Calgarian going about their day,” says CPS Staff Sgt. Keith Shufelt in a statement. “This incident will have a lasting impact on the victim, beyond her physical injuries.”
Investigators reviewed security footage from the area, interviewed witnesses and compared evidence to a previous robbery. It led police to identify two teenage suspects.
A 14‑year‑old and a 16‑year‑old have each been charged with one count of robbery.
The names of the accused cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
