Crews are battling a large house fire near Edworthy Park in Calgary’s west end on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the isolated home on a hillside between Sarcee Trail SW and the Bow River, just south of 16 Avenue NW, around 2:15 p.m.
Calgary Fire Department (CFD) spokesperson Carol Henke says the two-alarm fire is at a vacant home that was boarded up. It’s unknown if there were still utilities to the home.
She also says there are no fire hydrants nearby, so CFD has asked for support from Rocky View County and Springbank, who have offered tenders to help battle the blaze.
Tenders have a large tank of water and are used to transport water from the closest hydrant to a fire engine stationed near the fire.
“We have had to use tenders to come in and shuttle water,” says Henke. “We have multiple tenders that are doing it so that there is no interruption of water supply.”
The fire was still active as of 3:45 p.m.
“It’s sort of a forested area, so the concern is always that it will become a brush fire and then spread to neighbouring structures if the wind is not in our favour,” Henke says.
No injuries have been reported. Residents using the nearby trails have been asked to stay away from the area.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
