The sign welcoming tourists to the mountain town of Banff will be temporarily moved this week to deter crowds from gathering for photos during the G7 Summit.

In a post to social media, the Town of Banff says it’s moving the sign to avoid illegal parking on Norquay Road, which adds to traffic congestion and safety risks.

The move is temporary; crews will take down the sign on Friday, June 13, and put it back after the G7 finishes on Tuesday, June 17.

The town says the sign is scheduled to be permanently moved from Norquay Road to land near the entrance to the Train Station Parking Lot in the fall.

A designated protest zone has been set in the parking lot of the Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre for the duration of the summit.

However, as normal, vehicle parking on Norquay Road beside the Fenlands isn’t permitted, according to the town. This includes media, tourists and residents.

During the two days of the summit, the Banff Recreation Centre will be closed for two days. The Fenlands parking lot will be closed to vehicles for the safety of demonstrators.

People wanting to go to the site can park at the free Train Station Parking Lot and walk or cycle the 700 metres.

The Town of Banff municipality is not involved in any aspects of the G7 or the demonstration zone or security in town during G7.
