A tornado warning issued for parts of Central Alberta on Friday afternon has been downgraded to tornado watch.
The warning initially issued around 5:20 p.m. was for areas north of Drumheller and Hanna for storms moving northeast toward the Saskatchewan border.
“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” reads the watch. “Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes.”
As of 6:20 p.m., the storms were approaching Wainwright. The affected areas include M.D. of Wainwright near Wainwright, M.D. of Wainwright near Edgerton and Koroluk Landslide, M.D. of Wainwright near Chauvin Dillberry Lake and Roros, M.D. of Provost near Hughenden Amisk and Kessler, M.D. of Provost near Czar Metiskow and Cadogan, and M.D. of Provost near Provost and Hayter
A number of other areas in Alberta are under severe thunderstorm watches.
Environment Canada recommends taking the following action if a storm approaches:
- If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately
- Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet
- Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can
- As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris
- Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year
- Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors
