Body of 17-year-old Lethbridge boy who drowned in Oldman River recovered

The body of a 17-year-old boy who drowned in the Oldman River in Lethbridge Wednesday evening has been recovered.

Lethbridge Police say around 7 p.m. on June 18, officers and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services responded to reports of a possible drowning of a teen, who was trying to swim across the river and went under near the High Level Bridge.

He didn’t resurface.

Police sent out a drone and began an aerial search, while members of the Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services Water Rescue Team launched a boat equipped with sonar to search the water.

A member of the Lethbridge and Area Search and Rescue Association was also called out to help search the banks, police say.

The teen wasn’t found Wednesday and the search was suspended when it started to get too dark and unsafe to continue.

Police say his body was recovered around 9 a.m.

Although there is no evidence to suggest foul play, the body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Calgary, and the police investigation will remain active pending the results of an autopsy.

Police have interviewed several witnesses and officials are providing support to the boy’s family.
