Bow River boating advisory lifted by Calgary Fire Department

Conditions on the Bow River have improved following heavy rain over the weekend, prompting the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) to lift a boating advisory issued Sunday.
CFD says flow rates on the Bow and Elbow have decreased and river conditions have improved, but there is still reduced visibility and the temperature of the water remains cold.
Calgarians can resume river activities at these levels, but are encouraged to use caution.
Several city departments closely monitor Calgary’s rivers.
The city explains the spring and summer runoff season can bring melting snow and floating debris, creating dangerous conditions for people on the river. These conditions are what prompt advisories like the one seen over the weekend.
Along with turbidity and debris, conditions for a CFD-issued boating advisory include Bow River flow rates exceeding 280 cubic metres per second above the Elbow River confluence.
Despite lifting the advisory, CFD says the need for caution around Calgary’s waterways remains.
It adds that conditions are unpredictable this time of year and can change without warning, such as when sudden thunderstorms result in rapid, short duration increases in flow.
CFD and its aquatics team will continue to monitor and patrol the city’s waterways.
All watercraft users must wear lifejackets, ensure they have the required equipment for boating, and must avoid consuming alcohol and other intoxicants on Calgary’s waterways.
