Structure collapse in downtown Calgary sends 8 people to hospital

Emergency crews responding to 800 MacLeod Trail at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Several people are hurt after a structure collapsed at a market that was set up in downtown Calgary on Saturday.

Emergency crews were called to Macleod Trail near 8 Avenue SE for reports of people injured around 3 p.m.

Officers say a light standard and TV screens fell, injuring seven adults and one youth.

“We’ll call it an industrial accident for all intents and purposes, in which a number of people were struck by some collapsing scaffolding used for lights and video equipment,” Staff Sgt. Gord Fraser told CityNews.

They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Roads were temporarily closed while emergency services responded.

The structure was set up as part of the Naija Market Day, which ran from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday at Municipal Plaza outside Calgary City Hall. Officers added that organizers held the proper permits for the event.

The markets are held throughout Canada and are billed on the events’ website as celebrating Nigerian culture in Canada, “offering authentic products, (and) vibrant music, while attendees experience the local Nigeria market.”

An investigation is underway by police and Occupational Health and Safety.

In a Sunday update, Calgary police are asking anyone who attended the event and managed to capture photos or video of the incident to contact police.

They are specifically seeking images of the equipment setup and placement before the event kicked off, along with the collapse.

Anyone with information or images of the incident is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
