Lethbridge cab driver charged for alleged sexual assault in vehicle

By CityNews Staff

A 35-year-old cab driver is facing charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a 50-year-old woman inside his taxi.

Lethbridge Police say they responded to reports of sexual assault on June 19. They say the victim was assaulted by the driver before leaving the vehicle.

They add that he allegedly called her multiple times after the incident and appeared at her home, even knocking on her door. Police say she “feared for her safety and subsequently called 911.”

Investigators say the victim reported an earlier instance when he offered to help her with groceries, but instead of leaving them at the door, he allegedly entered her home to use the washroom without her permission.

As a result, Sujeepan Sathiyananthan faces two charges of sexual assault and being unlawfully in a dwelling house.

Police say he was released from custody with conditions of no contact with the victim. He is set to appear in court on July 8.
