While it’s going to get hotter in Calgary, the city is just out of reach of a heat warning activated for multiple nearby areas Monday.
Environment Canada says areas east of the city, such as Strathmore, Chestermere, and Drumheller, are under a heat warning.
Temperatures in the affected areas are expected to reach 30-35 C all week, with a peak in the high at around mid-week. It’s expected to cool down on Friday.
Calgary will reach a high of 26 C and peak at just over 30 C on Wednesday. Meteorologists say it will cool to around 20 C on Friday, while rain is anticipated over the weekend.
Health officials remind those in the affected areas to watch for signs of heat stroke, move to shade or a cool public space if needed, and not to leave anyone inside a parked vehicle.
They also recommend that residents reschedule outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, take frequent breaks from the heat, and drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
Infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated, are at increased risk of severe effects of the heat, according to Environment Canada.
“Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion,” a notice reads.
