An 18-year-old is dead after he lost control of his car and collided with a light pole in southwest Calgary on Sunday, police say.
It happened at around 3:30 a.m. in the 300 block of 194 Avenue SW.
Calgary police say the man was driving eastbound in a 2004 BMW 3201–the sole occupant–at a high rate of speed.
They added that the vehicle rotated counter-clockwise onto the east side of the bridge it was crossing, then moved onto a median and struck a light pole.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the fatal crash, while alcohol and drugs are not being considered.
Officers are looking for any witnesses or dashcam footage before the crash.
Police closed 194 Avenue between Macleod Trail and Sheriff King Street to investigate. It reopened at around 10:30 a.m.
Anyone with information about this incident, including dashcam footage, is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
