A woman is dead and a pickup truck driver is facing charges after a wrong-way crash in northeast Calgary early Monday.
Emergency crews were called to 52 Street between 32 Avenue and Temple Drive NE around 5:15 a.m. for reports of a multi-vehicle collision.
Police say a pickup truck driven by a 25-year-old man was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of 52 Street when the truck struck a woman in her 50s who was crossing the street.
The truck continued southbound on the wrong side of the road before hitting an SUV head-on and then bursting into flames. The SUV hit the centre median and came to a stop in the southbound lanes.
The pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the SUV, a woman in her 30s and a 35-year-old man, were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The pickup truck driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Temple resident Ed Koelle, says he was getting ready for work when he heard an awful noise.
“The sound didn’t stop, you heard a crash, crinkling for about five to 10 seconds, it just continued. I thought it was in front of my house, well, it was in front of my house,” he told 660 NewsRadio.
“I’m still shaking.”
Charges are pending against the driver and excessive speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash, according to CPS. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.
52 Street NE was closed in both directions between 32 Avenue NE and Temple Drive NE for several hours. The road reopened around 2:30 p.m.
Anyone with additional information or dashcam footage of the crash is being asked to call police at 403-266-1234, or submit tips to CrimeStoppers anonymously.
