Massive pothole causes flurry of flat tires on Calgary’s Glenmore Trail

Tuesday morning’s commute along Glenmore trail turns into tire and rim damage for some after running over a significant unmarked pothole. Phoenix Phillips reports.

Several vehicles have been left with flat tires Tuesday morning thanks to a massive pothole on a southwest Calgary road.

Some drivers, who were already left to deal with heavy rain and flooding on some roads, were met with another surprise after driving eastbound in the right lane of Glenmore Trail SW at Crowchild Trail SW.

“It seems like there’s scattering of cars, several cars, and for quite a while, that are stopping because of flat tires. It looks like something might be on the road,” said one caller to the 660 NewsRadio traffic centre.

“A pothole on Glenmore Trail eastbound, right hand land, under Crowchild Trail is shredding tires and there’s about 20 cars on the side of the road now with flat tires,” reported another.

The city described the conditions in that area of the road as “hazardous.”

Acting Sgt. Mike Sushelnitsky with the Calgary Police Service says calls about the large pothole started around 6 a.m.

“We’re working with our city partners to have the City of Calgary come out and inspect that pothole and provide repairs as well,” he said.

Sushelnitsky says around 10 vehicles were damaged, some of which are undriveable.

City officials closed the lane to allow for repairs and crews began filling the pothole by Tuesday afternoon.

“We expect better roads, better infrastructure and something we can rely on and not have to doubt when you’re driving on a road that your car will breakdown because negligence caused by city,” says Punit Somaya, whose vehicle was damaged.

Frustrated by the inconvenience of the situation and the damage to his vehicle, Somaya says he is is filing a claim with the city.

The lane on Glenmore Trail was reopened around 2:30 p.m.
