Four people are displaced and two pets are dead following a basement fire at a home in southeast Calgary on Tuesday afternoon.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says crews were called to a single-family home on New Place SE in Inglewood around 2:30 p.m.
Firefighters arrived to find thick smoke coming from the home’s basement.
Four people got out of the home before emergency crews arrived, according to CFD, but two cats and a snake were reported missing.
None of the residents sustained injuries. Officials say one cat was found safe, but the other two pets were killed in the fire.
The home has significant damage and the residents “will be displaced and will need to find alternative accommodations.”
Investigators are still working to figure out the cause of the fire and whether or not the home had working smoke alarms.
