Calgary Fringe: The Kinkonauts in ‘Wuthering Frights’

This Calgary Fringe offering comes without a script. It’s like Wuthering Heights, but with ghosts and stuff.

The Kinkonauts are back at Calgary Fringe with a Victorian horror twist this year called Wuthering Frights.

Executive director Andy Stefanato says the performance will draw on many familiar voices, but be something different altogether.

“Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, Dracula, like those sorts of ones are kind of where we’re taking our inspiration,” she says.

Audience suggestions still help the story take shape,

“I think it appeals to so many different people,” says Stefanato. “If you’re an improv person, if you’re like a literature or a BookTok kind of person… if you want to watch someone fall in love or you want to watch someone get eaten by a zombie — we’ve got something for everyone.”

The Kinkonauts have been crafting unscripted theatre since 2005.

Because there is no traditional script, there is no traditional rehearsal timeline either. The cast works on muscle memory around genre conventions, instead of learning a script.

“The closest I can compare it to is when you’re doing like practice for a sport as opposed to like rehearsing for a play,” Stefanato explains. “We’re reviewing a lot of kind of the tropes of that genre… and then we just have fun with it.”

The show opens Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 9, with both in-person and on-demand options. Expect supernatural themes, romance, humour, and surprises — along with vampires, ghosts, and the occasional attic-dwelling eccentric.
