A family dog is the lone fatality in an early morning house fire in southeast Calgary Wednesday.

The Calgary Fire Department and Calgary Police are on scene at a home on Legacy Reach View SE near Legacy Reach Circle SE.

Officials say the blaze broke out just after 5 a.m.

Public information officer Alex Kwan tells 660 NewsRadio responders didn’t encounter lots of flames, just heavy smoke.

“We did a thorough primary and secondary search. During that time, they did find one deceased dog,” he said. “The neighbouring homes were evacuated while crews tried to determine where the fire was.”

No people were inside the house at the time. Only one home was impacted.

The fire has since been brought under control.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
