120 new electric buses rolling into Calgary Transit’s fleet

Over 100 new electric buses will be cruising into Calgary to replace the city’s older Transit vehicles.
A result of funding from the previous federal government, Calgary Transit says 120 buses will be delivered starting in 2027 and are expected to be in service by 2028.
The city says the Nova LSFe+ electric buses have a proven track record of handling Canadian climates–which are already in service in Banff, Toronto, and Ottawa–and are slated to replace end-of-life diesel buses in the city.
Nova Bus, part of the Volvo group, is the main supplier, and the buses are expected to offer a similar look and feel to Calgary’s current Nova Bus CNG models.
The city says they will be used mostly for shorter routes and during peak times to “enhance service and reduce emissions in high-density areas.”
“This investment means more reliable service, lower operating costs over time and cleaner air in our communities,” said Sharon Fleming, Director of Calgary Transit, in a news release. “It also allows us to grow our fleet in a cost-effective way and prepare for future service demand.”
This comes after the city was awarded $325 million from the previous federal government to purchase 259 new buses in 2023, which built on a $165 million investment in the same year through the Zero Emission Transit Fund.
“Thanks to federal support, the investment will increase fleet size while diversifying fuel sources and reducing long-term costs,” the city said.
