2 Calgary suspects face over 50 charges after allegedly trafficking stolen trailers

By CityNews Staff

Two people are facing over 50 charges connected with the trafficking of multiple stolen utility trailers after a nearly year-long investigation, Calgary police say.

The investigation began when investigators received reports about two individuals selling trailers online in October 2024.

Officers say nine trailers were stolen across the city and Cochrane from October 2023 to December 2024, which were then sold online with fraudulent VINs to nine people.

Investigators then set out on a search warrant of a home on the 8000 block of 34 Avenue NW, seizing 191 identity documents, trailer re-vinning equipment, a .22 calibre rifle police determined was stolen from a previous break-and-enter, and ammo.

Officers say all the trailers were recovered and returned from November 2024 to August 2025, though the victims lost a combined $77,500.

Calgarian Samantha Bremner, 40, now faces 36 charges, including nine counts of stolen property over $5,000, nine counts of fraud over the same amount, and multiple counts of possession of stolen property, firearms, credit cards, and identity information and documents.

Gunther Shwarten, 39, and also from Calgary, is facing 20 charges, which include five counts of trafficking in stolen property, five counts of fraud over $5,000, possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000, and theft under $5,000.

The pair is set to appear in court Tuesday.

Investigators ask anyone with information about this incident to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
