A dog is being put down after biting a woman in the face in southeast Calgary on Tuesday.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says crews responded to the incident at around 8:30 a.m. on Fairmount Drive SE near 90 Avenue SE.

The fire department said the woman suffered extensive injuries to her face and head and was bleeding significantly, but remained awake and alert.

After first aid stopped the bleeding, she was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The city says the victim is a family friend of the dog owner and was known to the dog prior to the incident.

The owner voluntarily signed the dog, an American Pit Bull Terrier, over to city officials to be put down.
