Stolen car in Calgary leads to extended police chase along Highway 2: RCMP

A high-speed chase on Highway 2 ended with a dangerous wrong-way pursuit and an arrest near Airdrie.

An Alberta man is facing charges after allegedly leading police on a lengthy chase after stealing a car in Calgary.

The incident began when a 2007 Black Acura TSX was stolen with a dog inside from the area of 25 Avenue SW and 24A Street SW around 4:40 p.m. on Monday.

The suspect let the dog out of the vehicle and it made its way home. Police learned the car was in Airdrie several hours later.

Calgary police contacted Airdrie RCMP and asked them to help with the investigation at around 9 p.m. Mounties located the car driving northbound on Highway 2.

Officers covertly followed the car and RCMP allege the driver started driving northbound in the southbound lanes at high speeds. The suspect got stuck and police boxed in the stolen car and took the driver into custody.

The suspect was taken to Ponoka General Hospital for minor injuries.

Along with Calgary police, Mounties from Olds, Didsbury, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Ponoka, Blackfalds, and Red Deer, Red Deer and Wetaskiwin police dogs, and HAWCS helicopter assisted in the investigation.

“This incident demonstrates how all agencies work together for a common goal,” says RCMP Insp. Lauren Weare. “Team work ensured the suspect was safely taken into custody and no one was hurt.”

A 29-year-old Sherwood Park resident is facing several charges including fleeing police, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and possession of stolen property. The suspect is also facing charges for driving while prohibited, and breaching release order conditions.

The southbound lanes of Highway 2 were temporarily closed for the investigation.
