Wild FC captain commits to Calgary

Meggie Dougherty Howard is staying put.

The Calgary Wild FC captain has inked an extension to remain with the Northern Super League (NSL) club through to 2028.

“I really wanted to stay in Calgary because it’s exciting to be a part of a new organization, and I feel very strongly about building this club and its direction forward,” the 30-year-old American midfielder shared.

This is her first experience playing in Canada after a successful career in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States, where she made her mark with the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride, San Diego Wave, and Angel City FC.

“I’ve been to a lot of places throughout my career that have gotten it right, and others that have not,” she added. “The intentions behind this club are positive and aligned with my values as a player and a person, so I want to continue to play here and share my leadership on and off the pitch.”

Dougherty Howard has quickly become a key player for the Wild in their inaugural season, having logged 1,410 minutes, scored two goals, and tallied three assists.

“Over the next three years, I have really high hopes for this club. I want us to be competing for championships every year and be a team that other teams are fearful to play. I feel we are heading in that direction.”

The Wild (6-8-2) are back in action this weekend with a date in Montreal (7-5-4) to open a three-game road trip that will also see stops in Toronto and Vancouver. Calgary’s next home contest is Sept. 13, welcoming the Roses to McMahon Stadium.
