Calgary CTrain biohazard and urine cleanup calls reach high in July

Getting from A to B when you have to pee can be a challenge in Calgary, and the city says some people who can’t wait don’t, according to the latest data.

The City of Calgary’s Transit cleanup numbers for July show a recent monthly high in the number of biohazard calls on trains, including a hike in urine reports.

The recent data show there were 42 cleanup requests on trains and 73 at stations in July. Of those requests, nine on trains and 18 in stations were for urine.

Those numbers are the highest monthly total so far this year, with the next highest month for biohazard calls on CTrains being January at 28.

There have been 115 urine calls at stations and 34 on trains so far in 2025, and over 500 calls for biohazard cleanups on stations and 186 on trains. There were none on buses.

The city says a biohazard is any substance that could pose a health risk due to potential contamination.

“While urine is one example, other materials like blood, vomit, and items contaminated with bodily fluids are also considered biohazards,” a statement reads.

Transit says crews respond within two hours whenever a call is made.

Riders who see a biohazard can report it by texting 74100 or calling 311.
