Calgary’s top cop is sticking around until at least January 2027.
CityNews has obtained a memo to members from the Calgary Police Commission (CPSC) that says they are pleased with Chief Katie McLellan’s performance to date.
The memo noted that she brings “decisive leadership” and a “deep sense of compassion” to the job.
McLellan was named interim chief in May, replacing Mark Neufeld, who retired after six years with the force.
At the time, the commission stated that she would assume the role on an interim basis, and they would not immediately begin searching for a new chief. The CPC stated that it wanted to wait until several high-profile events concluded, including the G7 summit and the annual Calgary Stampede.
After being named interim chief, McLellan said she would look at ways to modernize the service and advocate for increased resources.
She joined the force in 1987 after immigrating from Scotland and spending 13 years working in frontline areas.
McLellan was officially sworn in as chief in June.
