Construction has begun on a multi-million dollar recreation facility in Calgary’s southwest.
The city says Belmont Fieldhouse and Library, near the intersection of 210 Avenue and Creekside Boulevard SW is expected to open in 2027.
The $71.8 million project will also feature a new library and an indoor multi-sport recreation space operated by the City of Calgary.
“As our city expands and continues to welcome new Calgarians, the need for additional library and recreation spaces has reached a critical point,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “The Belmont Fieldhouse and Library reflects our commitment to building vibrant, inclusive communities for all Calgarians.”
The project will span around 118,000 square feet and feature a multi-sort artificial turf field, field viewing areas, dressing rooms, washrooms, and administrative spaces.
Adjacent to the facility will be a 10,000 square-foot public library that will have a children’s area, collections shelving, open seating, public meeting rooms, and an outdoor learning space.
The city says the new facility will be a dynamic hub for recreation, learning, and community connection.
Funding for the Belmont Fieldhouse is thanks to a 2021 council decision that directed money to address gaps in recreation infrastructure.
It is also part of the city’s long-term strategy to expand high quality public recreation infrastructure, called GAMEPLAN
GamePLAN responds to population growth and aging infrastructure by setting service standards that increase bookable hours at fields, improve access in underserved areas and ensure new facilities are built to meet the evolving needs of Calgarians.
“Belmont Fieldhouse is a step forward in delivering on the goals of GamePLAN by addressing the urgent need for high-quality indoor fields,” said Heather Johnson, Director of Recreation and Social Programs. “Calgary continues to fall short of the standard for bookable field hours, and this facility is an important step in closing that gap. Belmont Fieldhouse marks the seventh of 13 fieldhouses envisioned in GamePLAN, and continued investment is essential to meet the growing needs of our city.”
Funding for the library was secured in 2022 through the Calgary Public Library Investment Program
