Calgary police say a shooting that occurred Sunday outside a business in the city’s southwest is now believed to be connected to a vehicle found on fire shortly afterward.

Officers were called to a parking lot near Macleod Trail and 53 Avenue SW around 5:30 p.m. for reports that a man had been shot.

When police arrived, they found a man in his 20s suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but his condition has since been upgraded to stable.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee the scene in a black Hyundai Kona. Just 15 minutes later, police located a vehicle matching that description in the southeast community of Inglewood.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and investigators are now analyzing the vehicle, which was found with a stolen licence plate, for further evidence.

Police believe the shooting was a targeted attack linked to an ongoing organized crime conflict in the city.

“A lot of these shootings are targeted; it just becomes more concerning when they’re happening in a very public space,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Campbell. “That’s a big concern; we’re certainly taking this seriously and will be having lots of investigators involved in tracking down who was responsible for this.”

Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward, particularly anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
