Calgary animal shelter welcomes record number of rescued guinea pigs

The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society has taken in 33 rescued guinea pigs, the largest small-animal intake in the organization’s history.

The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) has taken in 33 rescued guinea pigs, marking the largest intake of small animals in the organization’s history.

The animals arrived at the Calgary shelter on Saturday after being transferred from a Northern Alberta sanctuary overwhelmed by owner relinquishments.

The sanctuary, inundated with guinea pigs and struggling to provide adequate care, reached out to AARCS for assistance. In response, the rescue organization stepped in to ensure the animals would receive the proper care.

“AARCS is pleased to have been able to provide support to a sanctuary in need and bring in our largest intake of guinea pigs to date,” said Amy Corpe, AARCS Director of Animal Health, in a statement. “These animals are just as deserving of loving families as the cats and dogs we rescue, and we’re eager to find them forever homes where they can thrive.”

To meet the needs of the new arrivals, AARCS is urgently seeking foster and adoptive homes, as well as donations to support their care. While in foster care, all expenses—including food, supplies, and veterinary services—are covered by the organization.

AARCS is seeking monetary donations to support veterinary exams, deworming, and any unforeseen medical treatments. Donations of supplies, such as fresh vegetables, vitamin C cookies, hay, and pellet food, are also welcome.

Supplies can be dropped off at AARCS Safe Haven, located at 5060 74 Avenue SE in Calgary, and financial contributions can be made securely online at aarcs.ca/donate.
