Fire crews responded to a blaze in northeast Calgary on Monday afternoon that damaged two homes and displaced six residents.
The Calgary Fire Department responded shortly before 4:10 p.m. to reports of a fence fire between two homes.
Responding crews noticed heavy smoke and flames while en route, prompting a second alarm for additional resources.
Upon arrival, firefighters deployed hose lines to contain the fire spreading between the two houses. Another crew connected to a nearby hydrant to support suppression efforts.
Three adults and three children evacuated the homes without injury. Firefighters also helped residents retrieve personal belongings and rescued a pet fish and its tank.
Utility providers ATCO and Enmax shut off services to both properties as a precaution.
After the fire was brought under control, crews checked for hot spots in the roofs and walls. Fire investigators determined the fire started outside, between the two homes, and say it does not appear suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.
Due to the damage to the homes, all occupants have been displaced. Some are staying with family, while others are receiving support from the Red Cross.
