A man who’s Jeep got stuck while off-roading in Crowsnest Pass has been found by RCMP after being reported missing by his family.
The report came in around 9 p.m. Tuesday, when Crowsnest Pass RCMP were informed of a 50-year-old man who hadn’t returned home after off-roading in his Jeep up the Kananaskis Highway (Highway 40) during the day.
RCMP say his family had received videos from the missing man later in the afternoon and hadn’t heard from him since.
Southwest Alberta Regional Search and Rescue (SAR SAR) was sent out in the evening to the areas where the videos were recorded.
Search and Rescue were deployed the following day, at first light, and the man was found once intermittent communication was established, RCMP explained.
Ground crews were able to rescue the man based off their intimate knowledge of the area and the description provided by him.
RCMP say that the man’s vehicle had become stuck and he had walked away from it during the night.
The man declined medical treatment when found by first responders, although he was very cold, according to police.
RCMP are issuing a reminder to the recreational users of the backcountry to ensure that friends or family are aware of their intended route, as well as an expected return time.
In this case, they say the use of a GPS device would’ve given searchers critical information that would have led to a quicker rescue.
