Police seek witnesses in hate-motivated assaults on two women in downtown Calgary

Calgary Police are seeking help in solving two hate-motivated assaults that occurred in the city’s downtown this summer.

Calgary police are asking for witness information related to two separate assaults involving women in the downtown area, both of which have been identified as hate-motivated.

The first incident occurred on July 11 along 8 Avenue SE, near the northbound Macleod Trail. A woman walking in the area was approached by a man who made inappropriate remarks.

Despite his request to stop, the situation escalated when he began issuing threats. A nearby witness intervened, helping the woman move away from the man.

The incident was later reported to the police.

The second alleged assault took place on July 24 near 8 Avenue and 4 Street SE. A woman walking from her vehicle was confronted by a man who allegedly charged at her while shouting racial comments.

She returned to her vehicle and later asked colleagues to accompany her the next day. During that time, the same man was seen on a nearby bench and reportedly spat at the woman and her colleagues as they passed by.

Police have identified a suspect in both cases and are seeking the witness from the July 11 incident, as well as any additional witnesses or people with information that could support the investigation.

Hate is being considered a motivating factor in both cases; the Hate Crime Prevention Team is leading the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
