Turnout for day 1 of advance vote in Calgary down from 2021

Elections Calgary says nearly 14,500 people cast ballots on the first day of advance voting.

Monday was the first day Calgarians could cast their votes in the municipal election officially set for next month, thanks to advance voting.

On day one, 14,442 people headed to the polls, just 1.6 per cent of Calgary’s total eligible voters, according to Elections Alberta.

That is significantly lower than the turnout for the first day of early voting in 2021.

In that election, 23,329 people participated in advance voting on the first day.

Numbers from Monday include regular advance vote locations, hospitals, post secondary institutions, the Vote Bus, CNIB office, Deaf and Hear Alberta office, and YW Calgary as applicable.

As of Tuesday morning, these numbers are still considered unofficial.

Additionally, Elections Calgary says the turnout doesn’t include care facilities and shelters and will be reported as part of the turnout summary on Oct. 11.

Advance voting is open at 42 locations across the city from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Ballots cast during the advance vote, including special (mail-in) ballots, will be counted by hand at the counting centre after 7:30 p.m. on election day, Oct. 20.

Elections Calgary says ballot counting is expected to take two days due to the volume of votes cast and the legislative requirement from Bill 20 to count ballots by hand.

Official election results will be available at noon on Oct. 24.
