Speed, impairment likely factors in NE Calgary crash that sent 3 to hospital

In 2024, 37 collisions were reported at this intersection. And in 2025, the highest recorded speeds were over twice the posted limit. The area councilor is calling for harsher penalties.

Police say speed and impairment were likely factors in a multi-vehicle crash late Wednesday night in northeast Calgary that sent three people to hospital.

The collision happened around 11:50 p.m., at the intersection of 16 Avenue and 68 Street NE.

According to Calgary police, a 2002 Ford F-350, driven by a man in his 20s, was heading westbound on 16 Avenue at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light and entered the intersection.

At the same time, a 2010 Honda Civic, driven by a man in his 40s, was travelling southbound on 68 Street and entered the intersection. The Ford struck the Honda, causing both vehicles to spin out.

The Ford then veered into the eastbound turning lanes of 16 Avenue, colliding with a Nissan Versa driven by a woman in her 20s. The Ford also made contact with a 2013 Honda Civic stopped in the right turn lane and may have clipped a 2006 GMC Cutaway waiting behind it.

The drivers of the Ford, the Nissan, and the 2010 Honda Civic were all transported to hospital with minor injuries. The drivers of the 2013 Honda and the GMC were not injured and remained at the scene.

Police say speed and possible impairment by the Ford F-350 driver are likely factors in the crash. Charges are pending.

Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to contact Calgary police at 403-266-1234. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers.

Intersection recently saw return of photo radar cameras

That intersection is one of three that saw the reinstallation of photo radar cameras after approval by the provincial government.

In 2024, speeds of up to 192 km/h were recorded in the area — more than twice the posted speed limit.
