Alberta is gearing up for a significant makeover of its provincial licence plates, launching a public voting campaign to select a new design.
Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally announced the initiative on Wednesday afternoon in Edmonton.
From Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, Albertans can participate in a tournament-style online vote to choose among eight proposed licence plate designs. Each concept incorporates iconic elements of Alberta’s landscape and industries, according to the province, from the Three Sisters Mountains to symbols of agriculture and energy production.
The new plate, slated for release in late 2026, will feature the theme “Strong and Free,” echoing Alberta’s Latin motto and referencing the Canadian national anthem. Officials say the phrase underscores Alberta’s economic strength and its role as a sovereign province within a united Canada.
The motto is also used by Smith’s United Conservative Party as part of its branding.
“When the King of England was here a few months ago doing the throne speech in Ottawa, he mentioned ‘strong and free,” said Nally. “So, there is no political ideology that owns the corner on strong and free.”
How the Voting Works
- Phase 1: Eight designs compete for public votes.
- Phase 2: The top four advance to a second round.
- Phase 3: Two finalists face off in a final vote.
- The winning design will be revealed during the fall session of the legislature.
Albertans can opt to replace their current plates with the new design for a $28 fee. Alternatively, they may receive the updated plate at no cost during their regular vehicle registration renewal.
The existing plate, introduced in 1984, will remain valid as long as it’s in good condition.
The province says the new plates will include reflective technology to enhance visibility for law enforcement and automated systems. They will also meet international standards for legibility and counterfeit resistance.
