A man in his 40s is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Calgary’s southeast Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. near 17 Avenue and 38 Street SE.

According to Calgary police, a 2006 GMC Savana van was heading westbound on 17 Avenue with a green light when it collided with a pedestrian, who was crossing northbound in the crosswalk against the traffic signal.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the 47-year-old victim to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was eventually pronounced dead in hospital.

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was not injured and remained at the scene.

Police say impairment is not believed to be a factor, though speed and the circumstances surrounding the pedestrian’s crossing are under investigation.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the collision to contact the Calgary police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
