A reminder that personal fireworks are forbidden in Calgary seems to have fallen on deaf ears, with police saying they responded to a surge in fireworks-related incidents between Monday and Sunday.
Calgary police say they received at least 167 complaints about fireworks, with the bulk of reports coming from northeast communities, including Redstone, Cornerstone, Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Saddle Ridge, Taradale, and Martindale.
In addition, 29 calls were made to 311 regarding fireworks and noise disturbances over the same time period.
The Calgary Fire Department responded to two fires believed to be linked to fireworks.
On Monday night, crews arrived at a vehicle fire in Cornerstone, where a pickup truck was engulfed in flames. Investigators believe a lit firework entered the truck’s wheel well and caused over $30,000 in damage.
Just over 24 hours later, firefighters were called to a structure fire on 80 Avenue NE. Flames were spotted on the fourth-floor balcony of a multi-unit residential building.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which was traced to a smouldering planter pot. Investigators found evidence of fireworks landing on the balcony, and nearby residents reported seeing fireworks launched across the street.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
In addition, three businesses were charged for selling fireworks without a permit. Peace officers issued one ticket for discharging fireworks and gave 32 verbal warnings.
Police say around 60 pounds of fireworks were abandoned when people fled upon seeing officers.
City officials are reminding residents that fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited without a permit and must only be handled by certified professionals. Violations can result in fines ranging from $250 to $500, depending on the infraction.
In response to the recent incidents, joint education and enforcement teams will be deployed across Calgary in the coming nights to reinforce fireworks regulations and promote public safety. Residents are encouraged to report illegal fireworks activity to 311, including location details.
