Official results in for Calgary’s general election; Sharp formally requests recount

The second time was the charm for Jeromy Farkas, as Calgarians learn a day after election night that the former councillor and previous 2021 mayoral hopeful will become the city’s 38th mayor. Edward Djan has more.

Calgary’s municipal election results are now official and nothing has changed in terms of who won the 14 council races and the mayor’s chair.

The City of Calgary officially confirmed the results this week, following a preliminary recount in Ward 12 that led to ballot account corrections under the Local Authorities Election Act.

Jeromy Farkas secured the mayoral seat, returning to City Hall after previously serving as a councillor. The 14 wards saw a mix of incumbents and new faces.

Mayoral candidate Sonya Sharp has now formally asked for a recount of the mayor’s race, with Farkas winning by only 581 votes —less than 0.2 per cent of the total ballots.

“This is about ensuring transparency and strengthening confidence in our democratic process,” says Sharp in a statement.

Voter turnout reached 39.04 per cent, with 349,815 ballots cast out of 896,042 eligible electors. Turnout was down from just over 46 per cent in the previous election.
