RCMP investigating serious crash on QEII where driver ran away

Mounties north of Calgary are investigating an overnight crash on the QEII highway, where one driver involved ran away on foot.

Didsbury RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision in the northbound lanes of QEII near Highway 582 in Mountain View County around 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police say a Chevrolet Traverse and a Ford Bronco were both travelling north when the vehicles collided.

Four occupants of the Ford Bronco sustained significant but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a Calgary-area hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse, a 43-year-old man from Airdrie, ran away on foot.

He was later found and arrested with help from Olds RCMP and Police Dog Services, and then taken to the Didsbury detachment for further investigation.

Alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash, according to the RCMP.

Northbound traffic on the QEII was diverted for several hours while officers investigated.

Anyone who witnessed the crash and has more information is urged to call Didsbury RCMP at 403-335-3382 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
